A lot has been happening lately with our internet radio app, Eter Radio. The app is now five years old. Back in May 2021, Krystian Kozerawski released Eter on the App Store for Apple devices. Ever since then, users and reviewers alike kept asking about an Android version of Eter.

It’s finally here. Eter for Android launched a few days ago.

Eter on Android

Eter for Android looks and works much like its iOS and macOS counterparts. Naturally, there are small differences resulting from Android’s native interface elements, such as the bottom navigation bar. For that reason, we decided to include album artwork thumbnails directly in the mini-player bar.

Like the original iOS and macOS versions, Eter for Android uses the same radio station database. Stations can be displayed either as a list or in a grid view.

Eter can also identify songs using Shazam service. Currently, Eter for Android retrieves song metadata and opens tracks in Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube Music. Deezer support will be added in a future update.

Eter for Android works with Android Auto, making it easy and convenient to use in the car.

Synchronization

The app syncs favourite stations across devices. However, synchronization works differently on Android than on iOS and macOS, where favourites are synced through iCloud. On Android, Eter uses Firebase for synchronization, which requires signing into a Google account in the app’s settings.

Currently, synchronization between the iOS/macOS versions and the Android version is possible by exporting the list of favourite stations from iOS or macOS as an XSPF file and importing it into Eter for Android.

Full version

Browsing, searching, and listening to stations is available free of charge. Adding stations to Favourites list requires unlocking the full version through a one-time in-app purchase. As with the iOS and macOS versions, the full version of the app includes song history and a sleep timer.

Eter for Android is a separate purchase from Eter for Apple devices.
